Living with a data cap on home internet
Find out what your devices use (Byter on your Mac), set your streaming quality, schedule big updates, and turn on Low Data Mode for the capped network. Check your provider’s app for the household total.
Not all home internet is unlimited. Many satellite, fixed-wireless, 5G home and rural plans have a monthly cap or a fair-use limit after which you’re slowed down. Plan details change often, so check your provider for your exact allowance.
Know what each device uses
Your provider’s app shows the household total. Byter shows your Mac’s share, day by day, with alerts when usage is unusually high and monthly summaries.
Make the allowance last
- Turn on Low Data Mode for the capped network (System Settings → Wi‑Fi → Details).
- Set Netflix and YouTube to a fixed quality instead of Auto.
- Download big updates in off-peak or free periods, if your plan has them.
- Pause iCloud Photos and cloud backups during the busy part of the month.
