Why is my laptop using so much data?

Updated October 23, 2026

Short answer

Laptops use far more data than phones because they download full system updates, sync photos and files to the cloud, update apps in the background and stream video at higher quality. To stop it, turn on Low Data Mode, pause updates and sync on your hotspot, and track your usage so you can see where it goes.

You top up your data, connect your laptop to your phone’s hotspot, and a few hours later it’s gone. It happens everywhere data is metered: on prepaid plans in India, Brazil or Indonesia, on a capped contract in the UK or Europe, on unlimited plans that cap hotspot use in the US, or on a roaming eSIM while travelling. The good news: it usually comes down to a handful of things you can control.

The usual causes

What’s using dataRoughly how much
System updates (macOS or Windows)Often several GB at a time
Video streaming (Netflix, YouTube)About 0.7 GB an hour in SD, up to 3 GB in HD
Video calls (Zoom, Meet, Teams)Hundreds of MB an hour
Cloud photo and file syncAs big as the files you’re syncing
App and browser updatesTens to hundreds of MB each

Your laptop doesn’t know it’s on a phone hotspot. It behaves as if it were on unlimited home internet, which is why so much happens in the background.

Find out what is using your data

On a Mac, open Activity Monitor → Network to see which apps have used the most since your last restart (step-by-step in how to check data usage on a Mac). For a running total per network, with daily and monthly history, use Byter: it shows your hotspot usage separately from your Wi‑Fi, right in the menu bar.

Stop the data drain

  1. Turn on Low Data Mode for your hotspot (System Settings → Wi‑Fi → Details).
  2. Turn off automatic system and App Store updates.
  3. Pause iCloud Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive while on mobile data.
  4. Lower video quality and turn off autoplay.
  5. Keep big downloads for free or unlimited Wi‑Fi.

All the steps, with the exact settings, are in how to reduce data usage on a Mac.

Questions

Why does my data finish so fast on my laptop?

Laptops download system updates, sync files to the cloud and stream at higher quality than phones. On a hotspot these can use gigabytes in the background.

Does a hotspot use more data than Wi‑Fi?

No. A gigabyte is a gigabyte. But your laptop treats a hotspot like home internet and keeps downloading updates and syncing, so it uses more than you expect.

How do I track my laptop’s data usage?

On a Mac, Byter tracks usage for each network, with history from the last 30 minutes to a full year. It’s free. A Windows version is on the way.
