Can you set a data limit on a Mac?
No, macOS can’t stop at a set number of GB like Android can. The closest options are Low Data Mode (fewer background downloads), TripMode (block apps on a hotspot) and Byter (track usage per network, with alerts when usage is unusually high).
Android phones let you set a data limit and warning. Macs don’t. Here’s how to get close.
1. Reduce background use: Low Data Mode
System Settings → Wi‑Fi → Details → Low Data Mode, for each hotspot or capped network. See metered connection on Mac.
2. Block apps: TripMode
TripMode is a paid app that lets only the apps you choose use the internet on a hotspot.
3. Watch your usage: Byter
Byter is free and shows how much you’ve used today, this week and this month on each network. It notifies you when your usage is unusually high or a new record, and sends daily, weekly and monthly summaries, so you can compare against your allowance before it runs out.
4. Use your provider’s tools
Most mobile networks let you set spending caps or check your remaining data in their app. Combine that with Byter to see how much of it is your Mac.
