How to track hotspot data usage on a Mac
Your phone shows hotspot usage for all connected devices, and macOS doesn’t track it at all. To see exactly how much your Mac used on your hotspot, separately from your home or office Wi‑Fi, use a per-network tracker like Byter.
Many plans give unlimited data on the phone but a much smaller hotspot or tethering allowance. Others are prepaid, where every GB costs money. Either way, you want to know how much of it your Mac is taking.
On an iPhone
Open Settings → Mobile Data (called Cellular in the US) and scroll to Personal Hotspot. It shows the total used by every device on your hotspot since you last reset the statistics.
On Android
Open Settings → Network & internet and look for data usage. On most phones, Tethering & hotspot appears in the list of apps using mobile data. Menu names vary between Samsung, Pixel, Xiaomi and others.
On your Mac, per network
The phone can’t tell which device used what, and the totals mix every laptop and tablet that connected. Byter runs on your Mac and records usage for each network you join, so your iPhone hotspot, your Android tethering, your home Wi‑Fi and your office network each get their own numbers, by day, week and month.
- Spot a big download while it’s happening, with usage right in the menu bar
- Compare this month’s hotspot use with last month’s
- See your live speed and run a speed test on the hotspot
Use less hotspot data
Turn on Low Data Mode for your hotspot network (System Settings → Wi‑Fi → Details), and pause updates and cloud sync. All the steps are in how to reduce data usage on a Mac.
Questions
How do I see how much hotspot data my laptop used?
Your phone shows the total for all devices. To see your Mac’s share, use Byter, which records usage for each network on your Mac.
Does macOS know it’s on a hotspot?
macOS usually recognises an iPhone Personal Hotspot as a costly connection and holds back some background downloads. With Android tethering or a MiFi it can’t tell, so turn on Low Data Mode for that network yourself.
Why is my hotspot data running out so fast?
Usually updates, cloud sync and video. See why laptops use so much data, and track your usage with Byter to find the cause.
