Save hotspot data on your Mac in the US

Updated October 23, 2026

Short answer

Whether you’re on Verizon, AT&T or T‑Mobile, a laptop on your hotspot uses far more data than your phone. Turn on Low Data Mode for the hotspot, stop automatic updates and cloud sync, and track your Mac’s usage per network with Byter.

Many US “unlimited” plans come with a separate, smaller hotspot allowance, after which hotspot speed is cut. Your Mac is usually the biggest user of that hotspot data, so tracking it tells you how close you are.

See how much your Mac uses

Your network’s app or balance check shows what’s left in your plan, but not how much went to your laptop. Byter shows your Mac’s usage on each network: your phone hotspot, your MiFi or router, and any Wi‑Fi, by day, week and month. Byter also sends a heads-up when your usage is unusually high, plus daily, weekly and monthly summaries.

Make your data last

  1. Turn on Low Data Mode for the hotspot: System Settings → Wi‑Fi → Details.
  2. Stop automatic macOS and App Store updates from downloading on mobile data.
  3. Pause iCloud Photos, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive while on the hotspot.
  4. Lower video quality on YouTube and Netflix, and use audio-only calls when you can.
  5. Keep big downloads for unlimited or free Wi‑Fi.

Step by step: how to reduce data usage on a Mac.

Byter is an independent app and isn’t affiliated with any mobile network.

Questions

How do I check how much data my laptop used on Verizon?

Your network shows the total for your line. To see your Mac’s share on the hotspot, use Byter, which records usage per network on your Mac.

Why does my laptop finish my data so fast?

Laptops download updates, sync to the cloud and stream at higher quality than phones. Low Data Mode and pausing sync make a big difference.
