How big is a macOS update?

Updated October 23, 2026

Short answer

A full macOS upgrade (a new yearly version) is often 5–15 GB. Smaller updates are usually a few hundred MB to a few GB. Turn off “Download new updates when available” so they only download when you choose.

Typical sizes

Update typeTypical size
New yearly macOS versionOften 5–15 GB
Point update (e.g. 15.1 → 15.2)Hundreds of MB to a few GB
Security responseUsually small

The exact size depends on your Mac and how far behind it is. System Settings → General → Software Update shows the size before you download.

Stop updates downloading on their own

  1. Open System Settings → General → Software Update.
  2. Click ⓘ next to Automatic updates.
  3. Turn off Download new updates when available.

Then update when you’re on free or unlimited Wi‑Fi. Don’t skip security updates for long.

Catch it if it happens

A surprise update is the classic reason a data bundle vanishes overnight. Byter alerts you when your usage is unusually high and shows which network it went through.
